TAR ROOFING
Tar roofing is not very common in Virginia because it's normally used in areas with less rain and chance of freezing. Specifically, tar is used on flat roofs which eliminates the majority of residential buildings.
Some commercial buildings may opt for a tar roof to cover their flat roofs or sometimes homeowners will want more living space on their upper floor and will opt to add a deck over their garage and put a watertight tar roof under that deck.
On the plus side, the tar provides a watertight seal to repel rain. On the negative side it can get very hot, sticky and give off a distinct smell. Having a flat roof is generally not a good idea unless you are in a very dry climate anyway so here in Virginia we would probably suggest something else. Have a roof question? Give us a call or shoot us an email and we will be happy to help =)
